There are two kinds of people in the world - those that keep everything and those that throw out everything that isn't glued down.
Often they marry each other - but that' a whole other article
It may seem counter-intuitive that someone who makes his living by storing people's extra stuff is writing an article encouraging you to improve your storage space at home; however, that's me in a nutshell - a contradiction.
Besides, it really doesn't matter. It seems to be the American way to keep collecting things. Sooner or later, you'll probably be using a self storage unit!
So (drum roll, please) here are the ten suggestions.
One - Use under-the-bed storage boxes or suitcases to store out-of-season clothing, blankets and linens.
Two - Use your walls for storage. Install shelving in strategic places for books, CD's, toys, linens and towels, etc.
Three - Mount small appliances under the kitchen cabinets to save counter space. Use stackable canisters, hanging racks and other storage accessories to give provide more cabinet space.
Four - Mount pots and pans on a wall or hang them from a ceiling rack.
Five - Buy or build some budget cabinets to make extra space in your basement or garage.
Six - Use a closet organizer. You could have a custom one built, or you could buy a ready-made product from a wide number of hardware stores, or you could design and build your own.
Seven - Have you thought of using a set of stackable, rolling wire baskets to create more space in your closets?
Eight - Mount racks and hooks inside closet doors to organize shoes, ties, and belts.
Nine - If you simply need more closet space but can't build one, buy a wardrobe.
Ten - If none of these ideas work for you, I have one last suggestion. Throw something out! I have 2 year rule: if I haven't needed it in two years I AM living without it. I can throw it out. How about you?
Oh yes, remember the two kinds of people in the world - the savers and the tossers? Both have admirable qualities. In your pursuit of creating more space in your home, try to use wisdom from both approaches.
