So many of us aspire to lose weight, build muscle, and improve our health and overall attractiveness, but when it actually comes down to going to the fitness centre and working out we feel nervous and intimidated. We feel out of place around more serious fitness enthusiasts and we just don't know where to start. Unfortunately, this feeling of intimidation can lead you to stay on the couch, rather than taking the first step towards your fitness goals.

A fitness centre can be confusing for a first timer, but it is a fantastic place to get closer to achieving a healthier body. Here are some tips that will make going to the gym a little less scary:

Go With a Friend

If you feel awkward working out alone, why not find yourself an exercise buddy and head to the fitness centre together. Being there with a friend will make you feel much more comfortable and confident.

Working out with a friend has many other benefits, because you can encourage each other to push yourselves further, and you can also spot each other for safety when lifting heavy weights. Also making a routine to visit the fitness centre with a friend holds you accountable to your exercise goals and makes it harder to cancel your scheduled workout!

Learn How to Use the Equipment

A lot of intimidation in first-time gym users comes from not knowing how to operate the many fitness machines. Don't avoid the chest press, rowing machine, or inflatable ball because you don't know how to use them. However, don't just guess either because you could hurt yourself if you use a machine incorrectly. Instead, ask a member of staff to explain to you how to adjust the machine and use it properly.

Don't Compare Yourself to Others

When you see the people who are in better shape than you, it is tempting to want to compare yourself to them and try to match their amount of sit-ups, speed on the treadmill, or barbell size. However, this will likely result in you pushing yourself too far, pulling a muscle, and looking like a tired and sweaty mess. Remember to hold yourself to your own fitness standards and no one else's or you won't be back in the gym for weeks because you will be recovering from the pain!

The best strategy is to slowly increase the intensity of your workouts as you get in better shape, and compare yourself to your own previous accomplishments and not those of others.

If getting into better shape is an important goal, don't let the intimidation of a fitness centre stop you. Bring your friend, learn how to use the equipment and push yourself to do the best you can do!
